How does a heat pump work?
Understanding different types of heat pumps
-
Air-source heat pump: This system pulls heat from the air outside and transfers it inside the home through refrigerant-filled coils.
-
Ground-source heat pump: This geothermal device absorbs heat from the ground or an underground body of water and pumps it indoors.
-
Water-source heat pump: While not common, water-source heat pumps transfer heat between a home and a local water source, such as a pond or a river, to keep a home’s temperature comfortable.
-
Ductless mini-split heat pump: These devices work well in newly constructed homes without ductwork and in sunrooms, basements, or any area of the home that does not adequately warm-up or cool down. An outdoor air-source unit connects to multiple indoor units and lets the homeowner control the temperature of each zone for optimal indoor comfort.
-
All-climate heat pump: This system can operate in temperatures as cold as -30 degrees Fahrenheit and is 60 percent more efficient than a standard heat pump. It does, however, work more efficiently as a heater rather than an air conditioner.
