If you’re looking for one efficient system to heat and cool your home, look no further than a heat pump! Many people picture conventional furnace and air conditioning units when they think of heating and air conditioning. However, a heat pump heats and cools an indoor space while requiring little electricity to operate.

How does a heat pump work?

Heat pumps work by transferring air from one location to another. These systems don’t actively generate warm or cool air — they simply transfer warm air between the interior of a house and the outdoors. As a result, heat pumps are significantly more affordable to operate.

In winter, the system pumps warmer outside air into a home. In summer, it pumps warm inside air to the outside. Heat pumps are great for the mild Pacific Northwest climate as they’re most effective in temperatures 30 degrees or above. When the temperatures drop into the 20s, a secondary source of heat, such as electric resistance coil heaters, may be required.

Understanding different types of heat pumps

  • Air-source heat pump: This system pulls heat from the air outside and transfers it inside the home through refrigerant-filled coils.
  • Ground-source heat pump: This geothermal device absorbs heat from the ground or an underground body of water and pumps it indoors.
  • Water-source heat pump: While not common, water-source heat pumps transfer heat between a home and a local water source, such as a pond or a river, to keep a home’s temperature comfortable.
  • Ductless mini-split heat pump: These devices work well in newly constructed homes without ductwork and in sunrooms, basements, or any area of the home that does not adequately warm-up or cool down. An outdoor air-source unit connects to multiple indoor units and lets the homeowner control the temperature of each zone for optimal indoor comfort.
  • All-climate heat pump: This system can operate in temperatures as cold as -30 degrees Fahrenheit and is 60 percent more efficient than a standard heat pump. It does, however, work more efficiently as a heater rather than an air conditioner.
